I'll be joining three of my fantastic flute club colleagues to perform the closing piece on the Chicago Flute Club's 25th Anniversary Concert at the Merit School of Music on Sunday, May 17 at 2pm. We'll be performing Rie Schmidt's arrangement of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings for two C flutes, alto flute, and bass flute. We're honored to represent this amazing milestone in the history of the CFC!
Lakeshore Rush will perform at Merit School of Music's Festival downtown at Symphony Center on Tuesday, May 12 at 11am. We can't wait for this great opportunity to play for Merit's students from all their fantastic programs throughout the city. We will perform selections from Mason Bates' Life of Birds and Difficult Bamboo and Marc Mellit's Platter of Discontent.

Pianist Kirstin Ihde and I are looking forward to being featured at this year's International Alliance for Women in Music 20th Anniversary Congress. For the first time ever, it will be a virtual congress held online. We'll be recording a video in January 2015 of our recital titled "The Inclusive Repertoire: Flute and Piano Duos by Women Composers," which will be broadcast as part of the festival online between April 13-19, 2015.
Works will include Lili Boulanger's Nocturne, Germaine Tailleferre's Forlane, and Nancy Galbraith's Atacama.
An article of mine was published in the fall 2014 Journal of the IAWM that includes information on these, as well as other works by 20th and 21st century women composers of flute and piano duos.

Both composers we’re featuring have a Chicago connection. Bates is the composer in residence at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Mellits teaches at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Come hear the unique sounds of these fascinating composers!
The Life of Birds is comprised of a collection of miniatures, which explore different aspects of an aviary. Various birdcalls are passed between each instrument. Bates incorporates frequent syncopation and jazz styles throughout.
Platter of Discontent has whimsically titled movements such as “Paranoid Cheese” and “The Seduction of Brie”. Described as a post-minimalist, Mellits employs mixed meters, repetition, and the color of each instrument to create new aural soundscapes. Elements of rock make this piece one of our favorites!
Difficult Bamboo was commissioned by the CSO last year. Eerie, minimalist sections transform into energetic, wild sections that depict an aggressive species of running bamboo invading a landscape. As far as we know, we’re the first group to perform this piece without a conductor. Exciting!!

I'll be giving a solo performance and teaching a masterclass on Sunday, November 16 from 3-5pm at The University of Utah's School of Music. The masterclass will center around using daily warmups to strengthen technique. The entire studio is invited to take part in this interactive class. Be sure to bring your flutes!
